Spring Break 2015: Ski Family Vacation at Vail

So it’s Spring Break! and one of my favorite destinations is Vail, Colorado.  Having a family ski vacation at Vail is very baby friendly.  Staying at a resort that offers day care for your kids is a must, specially if you want to hit the slopes with your hubby instead of taking turns babysitting the kids.

Beaver Creek in Vail, Colorado

My top choice is Beaver Creek Resort, which offers a great daycare service for kids as small as newborns.  Their daycare is conveniently located two stories below the ski lifts.  And if you are still breastfeeding, like in my case, you can easily ski down the slopes a couple of times, breastfeed your baby, have a nice lunch, and ski a couple of more times before picking up your kids at 4pm.

The resort also has an ice skating ring and family tubing. In addition, just because your kids don’t ski yet they don’t have to give up the slopes.  Beaver Creek has a couple of gondolas for those riders on foot, so that everyone can enjoy the magnificent view.

This year the weather was around 50F during the day, and the skies were clear and sunny.  It was the perfect weather to enjoy warm chili and beer sitting by the slopes and to take the kids around to enjoy the snow.

Oh no! My Baby is Breech: Techniques for Turning a Breech Baby

Most babies are already in a head down position between weeks 32 through 38.  Only a mere 3% to 4% of babies do not turn.  Mine must be special because she fits in this tiny category.  So what is a mom to do when her birth plan was to follow a natural delivery?  Well, best to keep the hopes high as there are indeed a couple of things you can try to flip your stubborn little muffin.

  1. Cold and hot presses.  This is a very simple technique you can manage to do a couple of times a day at home when you feel your baby is active.  Just go to your freezer and grab that bag of peas you never got to cook and place it on the top of your belly, where your baby’s head is supposed to be resting.  At the same time, you can place a hot towel on the bottom of your belly.  Stay in this position for a couple of minutes.  The idea behind it is that the baby will try to move away from the cold and go to the warmest place.
  2. Music and light.  You can try playing music to your baby by placing your ear-buds on the bottom of your belly.  Same thing you can try with a lantern.  Your baby may want to get closer to either the music or the light.  As in the previous technique, do this when your baby is active.
  3. Yoga headstands and pelvic tilts.  Yoga headstands are believed to help turn a breech baby within24 hours.  For your safety, and that of your baby, do them with the assistance of a licensed yoga practitioner.  Pelvic tilts are very safe and you can do them anytime around the house when your baby is active, and your stomach empty! Try to keep the position for as long as you can, up to 10-15 minutes.  Another position is to walk on your knees around the house.
  4. Hypnosis.  You may download a hypnosis mp3 and listen to it whenever you have a time to relax.  Listen to it at least once a day.  The hypnosis session will help you connect to your baby and hopefully help him or her to turn.
  5. Homeopathy.  If you would like to try homeopathy to help your baby turn, then you can take around 200c of Pulsatilla.  Pulsatilla will aid your uterus to grow more evenly so that your baby has more space to turn.  Always consult a midwife or doula before taking any homeopathic medicine.
  6. Moxibustion.   OK, here we start getting a bit more complicated.  Moxibustion is a very ancient technique employed in Chinese Medicine, which combines Acupuncture and the use of Moxa.  Moxa is a cigar shaped stick containing the herb mugwort.  The Acupuncturist will stick a needle in each one of your pinky toes and then will burn the Moxa stick close to those acupuncture points.  The heat will then stimulate these points and help your baby turn. Success rate is believed to be between 69% and 85%.
  7. ECV (External Cephalic Version).  This is the last procedure you would like to attempt, as it is painful and can result in the rupture of the amniotic sac, sending you to labor. It is usually performed after 36 weeks, and it must be done by an experienced doctor, while under constant fetal monitoring. Success rate is very high, around 65%, although some babies manage to turn back into a breech position after the procedure.

So there are many things you can try before giving up on your breech baby.  Also, it is important to note that some babies have been reported to turn head down on the day of delivery.  So good luck on that muffin!

Trendy Swimsuits 2015

I am completely in love of the Australian swimsuit line Triangl.  I saw them for the first time on Instagram, and right after I saw them again on the cover of Women’s Health magazine worn by Britney Spears.

These swimsuits are made of neoprene bright colors.  They are indeed very unique, and so far you can only get them online at northamerica.triangl.com

Mimi Pochi: The cutest little pouch

This is the most versatile mini pouch I have found.  It is extremely cute, affordable, durable, and useful!

I own a couple of them in different colors, and I use them as coin purses, to store pony tails and hair clips, to carry jewelry when traveling, and even to pack my headphones so they are never getting tangled inside my purse.

Acne During Pregnancy: Safe Prenatal Skin Care

So where is “The Glow“?  During the first trimester of both of my pregnancies my skin turned its back at me.  I was breaking out in the most unusual places of my face.  It looked more as if I had a bad rash than a case of acne.  Frustrated, I started trying all of those organic and natural lines recommended for pregnancy, but my skin still got worse.  The issue was that I was suffering from acne due to my hormones, so I needed something that would actually treat the problem while my hormones were out of tune.  I had to find safe ingredients for my sensitive oily skin.

After doing my research, it was clear that I could use both glycolic acid and benzoyl peroxide to treat my acne.  I tried different brands and combinations until, finally, I found that the following regime was great on my skin:

Morning:

  • Cleanse with Acnefree oil free acne cleanser using a Clarisonic brush

New Year’s Resolutions 2015

As 2015 starts, I can’t stop thinking of my new years resolutions to make this a better year for my family and me. These are some of the top on my list:

– Exercise more.  I would like to hit the gym at least 3 times a week, and complete either one long run or one Tracy Anderson workout a week.  Last year I was very disciplined about my workout routine until I gave birth to my baby girl and found out myself choosing a hour extra of sleep rather than going to the gym.

nyresolution

This is me keeping up with my New Year resolution of exercising more LOL.

– Read more books.  I used to read lots of books before becoming a mom.  After that, of course I kept on reading, but mostly about babies and parenting … this year I would like to go back to my favorite topics, specially historical fiction :).

– Organize my family pictures.  This one has been haunting me for a couple of years already.  I am confronting that big pile of family pictures this year!

– Potty training my 2 1/2 boy.  I hope this one is in my little boy’s New Year resolution list as well LOL.

– Cooking new recipes for my family.  Last year I got a couple of nice cooking books because I wanted to try different recipes everyday. Nonetheless, I think I may have prepared 1 or 2 recipes of each :(… This year I would like to at least prepare one new recipe a week.

– Get one massage per month.  Carrying a baby around all day long gives me backaches from time to time, so what a better way to fix the problem than getting a massage.  I think full time mommies deserve this type of pampering.  I love Massage Envy Brickell for regular massages, and I never miss the Miami Massage Month.  My favorite Spa in Miami is Lapis, at the Fontainebleau Miami Beach.

– Writing a children’s book.  I had written a very good one long time ago but never got to publish it.  I would like to see if I can do so this year.  It was a really nice story, and I know that my kids would love it :).

These are just some that came into my mind.

I hope we all can stick to our New Year Resolutions :).

Placenta Encapsulation: The pills you will most likely NOT share with your friends

I know what you are thinking, YIKES! But don’t turn the page just yet. Your placenta has still some use after delivery!  You can use it for postpartum healing, as it has been used for thousands of years in Chinese Medicine, and other cultures around the world.

The belief is that your baby’s placenta still retains many of its nutrients after birth.  For this reason, the placenta is dried, grounded, and encapsulated so that the mother can take advantage of its consumption. Some of its benefits are the replenishment of vitamins and minerals, balancing hormones, increasing milk production, and curbing postpartum depression.  Moreover, the capsules can be frozen for years to be taken during menopause.  Hence, by consuming the placenta in capsule form, the mother can aid her healing process and recover much faster!

The ones below are my own placenta capsules :).  Your midwife or Placenta Encapsulation Specialist should provide you with the instructions for proper consumption and storage.

Get into the Book Club: A Year of Books

I bet you have already heard of Mark Zuckerberg’s new page on Facebook, a Year of Books. Last time I checked it already had 78K likes 😱👍👏!
I think is such a nice idea that someone that can reach so many people can bring them together to read a new book every two weeks.
The first one on the list is the End of Power by Moisés Naim. Are you in the book club? I already got my copy in my Kindle ☺️.

How to Exercise on Your Way to the Market

Having a baby and a toddler makes it difficult to find time to exercise.  That is why is so important to multitask.  Ditch the drive and instead take your kids for a stroll to the market.  Pushing a double stroller plus the groceries around the neighborhood will sure count as a workout.  In my case, it is a 16 block round trip.  Not only do you get to do your groceries, but you can enjoy taking a stroll with your kids while burning some extra calories!
